FIRST MEETING OF THE INTER-VOIVODESHIP IWW E70 TEAM IN 2018
The meeting addressed the possibilities of producing an expert study on the specification for the new layout of the Polish section of IWW E70 (the Oder – the Vistula). The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship (Province) presented a roadmap for the task. It also committed itself to produce an extended Description of the Subject of the Contract (OPZ) and a financial schedule under the Emma project, with expert support from the Pomorskie, Wielkopolskie, Lubuskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie voivodeships.
The discussion also included the existing navigability issues on the waterway which connects the Oder with the Vistula. No lockage possibilities on the Okole Barrage, due to its overhaul, are a big difficulty for fans of sailing. It impedes the traffic on the Bydgoszcz Canal, the Brda etc. In the opinion of the meeting's participants, it would be a solution to ensure carriage for small vessels. In the coming years, barrage overhauls are planned for Osowa Góra and Czyżkówko. Repairs done just on isolated facilities of this type make it impossible for the waterway to develop for tourism. The representatives of the voivodeships said that it would be best to overhaul several locks at the same time, even at the cost of closing down the waterway for a period of time. Both the local authorities and the boating community expect comprehensive repairs to be done on the Bydgoszcz Canal locks and, subsequently, on the Noteć, but importantly—within as short a period as possible, with carriage provided for boats.
The subject of navigation difficulties on the Polish section of IWW E70 will also be an important topic for a conference planned for September 2018, dedicated to the tourism-related use of International Waterway E70.
In order to get an overview of the existing solutions in waterway revitalisation, study visits of IWW E70 Team members are planned this year to the Wrocław Waterway Node and the Great Wielkopolska Loop (Wielka Pętla Wielkopolska).
