The first shipment of containers from the Port of Gdańsk sailed along the Lower Vistula to Chełmno.
The 40-foot containers were transferred from lorries to a Galar-type barge. In total, they contained 150 tonnes of cargo with supplies for, among others, companies from the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship. At the quay in Chełmno, the goods will be unloaded onto lorries while export containers will be put on the barge The return to Gdańsk is scheduled for 9 April.
This pilot project is aimed at identifying the boundary conditions that need to be met to make container transport by water attractive and competitive with other modes of transport. The Galar-type barge can take up to 18 40-foot containers (2 layers) on board, while the pusher tug can handle a set of 4 pontoons.
