Repair work is underway, after a structural defect in the facility was revealed in January this year, probably resulting from a faulty design.
Independent bridge experts have recommended the bridge be taken out of use until repaired. The construction supervision authority found the decision to be justified. Trasa Uniwersytecka street and the waterway on the Brda River have been closed.
The Municipal Roads and Public Transport Authority, as the facility manager, immediately secured the structure itself and all documents that could be helpful in determining causes of the failure. Notification was also sent to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, indicating a design error as the probable cause of the failure. Immediately after the bridge was closed, emergency work was ordered to secure the bridge by supporting its entire structure with special supports, and preparations began to announce a tender for repairs. On 30 July 2021, a contract was signed with the “Kormost” company. The repair works will cost PLN 6.3 million. The deadline for completion is 180 days from the date of signing the contract.
The repair work includes three main stages:
– design work,
– repair work carried out in the field,
– test loading after repair, inspection of structural components, and obtaining relevant documents and permits.
Upon completion of the third stage, the facility will be put back into use.
